They are found in grasslands and fields throughout Japan and are popularly known as "happiness-bringing
insects. Characteristically, they have red wings with seven black spots.
The wings are usually red in
color, but some are orange.
This specimen was CT scanned at the request of Bandai Co. This 3D data is used in the new “Nanahoshi Lady
Beetle” of the capsule toy “Ikimono Dai Zukan” series.

The CT scan data shows a 0.2mm claw at the end of the leg, but this is not thought to be the reason why the
animal can walk on slippery surfaces such as glass walls.
Since the claw alone causes slipping, it is thought that the animal evolved to have fine hairs (a few µm in
diameter) on the soles of its feet, which are not shown in the data, to prevent slipping due to
intermolecular forces (Van der Waals forces).
