A species of dragonfly classified in the family Oniyamatidae, it is the largest dragonfly species found in
Japan, and the female is larger than the male.
The mesothorax and metathorax are true to one another, and the muscles for moving the wings are well
developed. They are excellent flyers, able to remain stationary in the air or fly backward. They are
carnivores, sometimes preying on wasps. Their jaws are strong and their bites can cause bleeding.
The adult's compound eyes are a beautiful emerald green color and consist of approximately 20,000
individual eyes. These eyes are designed to be sensitive to quick movements.
The wings have a number of spine-like protrusions on the surface. The wing surface is covered with spines,
and these protrusions are used for flight. The irregularities on the wing surface generate a vortex, which
is kept in shape by the protuberances, allowing air from the outside to flow behind the wings and enabling
them to fly with stable buoyancy even in a slight breeze.
