Found in humid lowland rainforests in Nicaragua and Paraguay, these ants are larger than those found in
Japan. They are also called “24-hour ants” or “bullet ants” because they have a poisonous stinger and the
pain of the sting lasts for 24 hours, or “bullet ants” because of the intensity of the pain.
This sample was CT scanned at the request of Bandai Co. This 3D data is used in the new “Paraponera”
of the capsule toy “Ikimono Dai Zukan” series.

CT imaging showed that the venom needle is almost the same contrast as the body, and the contrast of the
spines on the mandibles is brighter, suggesting that this area is the stiffest.
Given the large muscles used to move the mandibles in the head, it is likely that a bite with the jaws as
well as the venom needle would be quite painful.
