Manticora latipennis scan data

This is the world's largest species of hammiyo, which lives in southern Africa. It is said to be the strongest carnivorous beetle in the world, and is so ferocious that it can prey on rats and lizards. In addition, the H. hammii is known to move so quickly that it is easy to lose sight of it when it is preying or escaping.

This specimen was CT scanned at the request of Bandai Co. This 3D data is used in the new “Oenma leopard” of the capsule toy series “Ikimono Dai Zukan” (Big Book of Ikimono).

The CT data showed that the body contrast is brighter than other insects and is very stiff. They are so hard that a scorpion's stinger cannot penetrate them.

They also have huge jaws, which are symmetrical in females but asymmetrical in males. The CT scanned specimens differed by about 6 mm in length.
