A saltwater fish belonging to the sea bass family, Hoboidae, and found on sandy and muddy bottoms from
Hokkaido to Kyushu. It is said to be able to open its nightshade-colored pectoral fins in order to mock or
startle the eyes of its enemies.
The soft stripes on their pectoral fins act like legs, allowing them to walk and find prey in the sand.

CT scans have shown that the head and back are covered with bony plates (hard plate-like bones), which seem
to protect them from sharks and other natural enemies.
When a sea robin senses danger, it makes a sound using its floating bag and surrounding muscles to startle
its enemies. This sound is said to be the origin of their name.
