The singing minmins are males and have a ventral valve on their abdomen, which plays an important role in their singing. Cross-sectional examination of the male's body reveals a structure of muscle fibers for wing movement on the dorsal side, and a hollow resonance chamber in the abdomen. By vibrating the sound-producing muscles inside the abdominal valve, the minmins produce sound.
