The sand eel is a member of the conger eel family that inhabits the warm waters of the Indian Ocean and
western Pacific Ocean, and grows to a length of about 30 to 40 cm. It is well known for burrowing vertical
holes in sandy areas and burying its body, then swaying in groups with only its head exposed.
This sample was requested by NHK Enterprises, Inc. and CT scans were conducted as a project for NHK
E-television's “Gyogyotto Sakana★Star”.

CT scans revealed that the bones around the eye sockets and mouth are precisely aligned, enabling them to respond quickly to even slight changes in water flow.
