After hatching from the pupa into an adult, the beetle remains in the pupal chamber for about 10 days
without eating anything before emerging above ground. The male beetle's life span is about one to three
months.
When competing for food or females, they use their long, extended horns to peel their opponents from the
bark and fling them away.
Hard-barked trees such as sawtooth oak cannot scrape their own epidermis, but thin-barked trees use a
hardened organ on their mouth called a clypeus to scrape the bark and produce sap. It is a little-known fact
that beetles can rub their body parts together to make a “squeaking” sound.
In addition to the internal organs and muscles, a space was found near the middle of each leg that was
particularly difficult for X-rays to penetrate.
When we checked the inside of the body on the tomogram, we found that the area near the base of the wings is
mostly filled with muscles for flying.
The joints between the two upper wings are uneven, suggesting that they fit together when closed.
