No.21 Banded Houndshark

This individual was a male Dotishima shark about 1 meter in length. Dotishima sharks live in shallow waters around Japan and grow to about 1 to 1.5 meters in length. It is a docile creature that does not attack people and is often kept in aquariums. They are rarely used for food, and even when caught in the nets of fishing boats, they are rarely sold on the market. This sample was requested by NHK Enterprises, Inc. and CT scans were conducted as part of NHK E-television's “Giggling Sakana★Star” project.

軟骨魚類であるドチザメは、CT生物図鑑に掲載のサバ（硬骨魚類）と比較しても背骨の写りが暗く、体の大きさに対して小さく柔らかい軟骨が並んでいることがうかがえます。
また、サメの歯は短いサイクルで次々に生え変わる仕組みになっていますが、骨格のビューで口を拡大して見てみると、歯が手前から奥に何列も予備の歯が並んでいる様子が観察できます。
さらに今回はサメ肌を切り取ってナノフォーカスCTでスキャン（ボクセルサイズ3μm）したところ、歯のような硬いウロコが並んでいることが確認できました。サメの体表は頭から尾びれ側になでると滑らかですが、反対からなでるとざらざらしていて、手袋を破るほどの抵抗があります。サメ肌のビューでは、そんなウロコの形状を立体的に観察することができました。
