  • What is a CT scan?

    CT bio-illustration uses a device called
    industrial CT as a method of scanning living organisms.
    CTs normally found in hospitals and other places are specialized for imaging the human body,
    but industrial CTs are optimized for more accurate imaging of stationary subjects.

    STEP 1 Radiography

    In industrial CT, a sensor receives the X-rays that are irradiated from the X-Ray tube and pass through the object. The sensor detects the degree of absorption of X-rays as they pass through the subject and records a two-dimensional X-ray transmission image. By doing this from 360° while rotating the subject, a large number of X-ray transmission images are recorded.

    STEP 2 Reconstruction

    X-ray transmission images are two-dimensional image information, but can be converted into three-dimensional data by computer reconstruction of the large number of images collected. While optical 3D scans, which are commonly performed, can scan only as far as light can reach, CT scans can capture even the internal structure of the subject because they measure by transmitting X-rays.

    STEP 3 Data correction

    Data reconstructed from 2D to 3D includes shadows of jigs used to hold organisms and unwanted shapes generated by image noise and other factors. These can be removed using specialized software to create beautiful 3D data.


    What is Industrial CT?
    Industrial CT is a digital data acquisition system that obtains X-ray transmission images from all 360-degree directions and processes them with a computer to obtain three-dimensional information. It is used in various fields for internal inspection of samples, including internal defect detection, dimensional measurement, 3D databasing, foreign material detection, orientation analysis, and reverse engineering.
